Well, it has happened. We now have livestock!! Goats. Boer goats. They are meat goats... we couldn't figure out who would milk "milk goats." 20 does to be exact. We bought them from someone who lost the lease on the land they had been grazing. They also had eaten just about everything in that field. So, we borrowed a trailer and drove down to get them. Apparently, they realized that "something was up" because though they usually come pretty easy to feed... about half of them would not be fooled. It took nearly two hours to finally round all of them up. We made the trip back okay.Unfortunately, though we were pretty sure that we were going to get th
ese goats, we did not realize that there was time issue and that we HAD to get them Sunday. We were scrambling to finish things up. With the help of a few friends, got the minimal amount of wire up and a little bit electric. (Right now, while there is GREAT goat food in the field we're more worried of critters (e.g. coyotes or some of the free running possibly wild dogs we have seen.)All except one of the goats made it without trouble. One of the smaller ones ke
pt lying down in the trailer and she got trampled. We were not sure if she's make it through the night, but she did. It still seems a little tenuous. She spends most of the time lying down while all the others are grazing. We'll just have to see.
