I can say one thing good about the wintery precipitation we've gotten this month, it has been beautiful. I can't say anything else nice.
The road and driveways have not been good at all. They have been either too icy, too slushy or too muddy to drive on. We've had to park at the bottom of the driveway and walk for the better part of this month. Depending on the ice, it's a good quarter to half mile hike. It didn't seem so bad at first... then we 'needed things.' Groceries. Dog food. Christmas gifts. Our LLBean toboggan has never been so useful or used!
Then there are the animals. Fortunately, the goats both have springs in their fields to get water. Unfortuneately, our 'farm truck' stopped running during the first leg of the winter mess. Most of the time, we can use our other truck for hay. But if not... there is always the toboggan!
As for the chickens, that was another matter. It was almost impossible to keep them in fresh water. It would freeze too quickly. What little eggs they were laying, they ate. So... we decided to try to sell them but had no takers. Then we decided to give them away ('to a good home') and have been absolutely inundated with calls. They left to their new home just before the most recent big snow hit. We're planning on new chicks this spring... and hope to be able to have a way to heat their water by then.
In the meanwhile, fingers crossed for a melt....
