More snow

Like most of the mid-atlantic states, we were privy to a dumping of snow these last few days. It appears that our farm wasn't spared and in some places snow was a foot and a half or more deep. Both times we've been out there, the roads have been very slick (which was made worse by the freezing rain that fell in the middle of the storm.)

Needless to say, the house build is on hold (again) for the time being. We understand that they might try to get the road plowed and get up there before the next forecasted snow arrives but we will see.

In the meanwhile, we have busied ourselves tending to the farm. With all of the snow, it has been an extra chore to even get out there. We've had to park way out and walk in. Today, the kids joined us. We've found the toboggan to be quite useful. In addition to towing the kids in, it was used to hall water and hay to the goats.

Of course, it would seem now (one of the worse times weather-wise) we would have trouble with a goat. One of the nannies (nicknamed "saddle bag" because of her distinctive markings) appeared to go into preterm labor the other day. Labor seemed to stop on it's own but she, very unfortunately, developed a large prolapse (in other words, her female parts 'dropped out' for lack of a better explanation.) Appearantly, this can happen with goats when they are very heavy with child.

We likely would have called the vet to come out IF the roads weren't so horrible. And there's absolutely no way we could have gotten her to a vet-- the truck that has the panels is broken down and we would've had to drag her thru the more-than-a-foot of snow more than half a mile to get to the truck since our road was so bad. With considerable effort, we were able to reduce (put back) most of it. Gave her an antibiotic shot, made her a bed of hay, and crossed our fingers that it stays put, she stays pregnant and tolerates the whole ordeal.

We are about 8 weeks away from kidding season and the "fun" has already started!
