The green light, our one year mark...and a surprise

It has been a very excited few weeks. First, and most importantly, we found out that we are going to get our financing! We'll "make it official" when we sign the closing papers in two days. We shall certainly celebrate! We have been trying to get everything ready and in the process did get our building permit last week. Next on the list is the task of getting electricity up to the house site.

This week also marks our one year anniversary of being goat people. It has been one year of learning... full of joys and heartaches. We started with 20 goats and currently have 23 goats... 14 nannies, 6 little does and 3 little bucks. The hardest part was that we lost so many kids to parasites. We've discovered that we are not alone and many other nearby goat farms had similar troubles. Appearantly, the weather and resistance did not bode in our favor. Things seemed to have turned around in the last 2 weeks. Goats are looking better. We are now making plans for breeding again. We think that we will probably keep one of the little bucks (#13) for breeding later and have the other 2 made into wethers.
Despite all the rain, the land is doing well. With each heavy rainfall we seem to loose a little gravel from the road. Hopefully, with a few more ditches & pipes, we'll get the water to flow around the driveway and not through it. "Money run" (Jonathan's named creek) is looking much more like a reputable creek... the rain and grass has helped that. See the June 25, 2009 post for a comparison shot.
The chickens are growing well. We expect it won't be too long before we can expect to see our first eggs. They have enjoyed their little tastes of freedom as we let them out when we are around. We are afraid to leave them out unattended for too long. There are a handful of predators about (most noteably a pair of large hawks... who obviously would not be deterred by the electric fence.) Appearantly, one chicken learned that Micah was the one to hang around... as you can see from the photo I discovered them in the utility shed (which is around the corner and out of sight from the chicken coop.) Micah was playing with grain (like it was a sand in a sandbox) and the chicken was eating to her content.
The final thing to share is a "surprise" we learned of tonight. Our contractor left Jonathan a voicemail which he didn't recieve until after dinner. He had gotten started! So, we drove up (in the dark) to anxiously find...forms for the footers! Even the kids (who I don't think really understand what they are) were excited.
